Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. Projects

Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. is engaged in immediate and far-ranging activities which support "The Year of Finding the History of Mathews County" initiative. Ongoing projects include the writing, research and publication of a comprehensive history of the county by noted author and historian Martha W. McCartney and continuing the series of Historic Homes and Properties of Mathews County, Virginia, participation in state and local architectural and archaeological surveys of county historic buildings and sites, the initiation of conversations with Mathews County Visitor and Information Center to transform the upstairs of Sibley's General Store into Mathews County Historical Museum, maintaining Thomas James Store, Tompkins Cottage and Mathews Archives and keeping them open to the public, supporting the New Point Comfort Lighthouse Taskforce and Fort Nonsense Historical Park and presenting lectures, tours, programs and social events throughout the year.
