MCHS launches fifth book in historic homes series
Book launch April 1, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Tompkins Cottage Museum | 43 Brickbat Rd. | Mathews, Virginia

Mathews County Historical Society, Inc. announces the release of Historic Homes and Properties of Mathews County, Virginia Pre-Civil War Fifth in a Series of Five, effective January 21, 2023. This volume completes the inventory of fifty properties featured in the series.

The series documents early properties that are noteworthy both architecturally and historically and adds ten more houses to the body of knowledge that makes up the rich history of the county. Bar Neck (James Thomas House), George P. Owens House, Goshen, Green Plains, Hesse, Holly Point Farm (Spirit Hall), John Forrest House, John Haynes Jarvis House, Keeble House, and Providence (Hopemont) are highlighted. Historical accuracy is the main goal in society publications. Thus, primary sources such as land records, account books, family Bibles and other factual resources are used as well as analysis by acclaimed architectural and research historians.

An official book launch will take place April 1, 2023, to coincide with the opening of Tompkins Cottage Museum for the season. At that time, the owners of the homes featured in Book 5 will be recognized and honored for graciously opening their homes.

Historic Homes and Properties, Book 5, as well as Books 1 – 4, are available for sale at Mathews County Visitor and Information Center, Tompkins Cottage Museum, and on Amazon.com. The book sells locally for $12.00 which includes tax, and on Amazon for $11.95.
